FIVE CAUSES OF
CYBER CRIMES AND FIVE SOLUTIONS
By

Any society that places more value on acquiring wealth rather than
pursuing cultural and human value will soon be eroded away and be forgotten so
quickly and a society where an unrepentant criminal is worshipped for his
wealth than revering a university professor who has meritoriously attained the
peak of his career will be fading away unknowingly.
Cyber-crimes are unlawful conduct
carried out by unauthorized individuals with the use of computers, electronics
and other ancillary devices, which causes system interference, data
interception, intellectual theft and fraud. It is also the act of using
computer to abuse data and sabotage, disruption of network, traffic by denying
services, attack/email bombing, creation or distribution of viruses, identity
theft, cyber pornography and cyber-squatting and other forms of unethical
practices.
The fast growing cyber-crimes in our society today is as a result of
many societal factors which has make the little mustard seed to grow and
develop into an established tree which may not be uprooted again if necessary
preventive measures are not taken quickly.
Reasons for individual’s engagement
in these unlawful acts and hereby violating the law are numerous which is having
a lot of consequential effect on the economy. A lot of factors are responsible
for individuals’ engagement in any form of unethical cyber practice which in
turn is the reason for some of their actions.
Break in relationship of parents is one of the reason why we have
cyber-crimes in our society today. The rate of divorce in our society today is
so alarming that marriages less than six months are already in court waiting to
be dissolved. These cases of divorce in our society today is one to worry about
as products of these unsettled homes grow up to engage in every form of
unethical cyber practices.
Unemployment is also one of the major factor that contribute and promote
cyber-crimes in our society. There are a lot of unemployed graduate in our
society. Unemployment will hinder an individual to be able to contribute
positively to national growth and development and may be unable to feed
properly if not gainfully employed and may cause an individual to engage in
unethical cyber practices.
Uncontrolled love for materialistic things. Excessive love for money and
not lack of money is also responsible for engagement in all forms of unethical
cyber practices. The society place so much premium on wealth acquired by
individuals and pay no or less attention to the number of life that have been impacted
positively by them. An unrepentant criminal is worshipped for his wealth and
more revered than a university professor.
Negative peer group influence is
also responsible for individual’s engagement in all forms of unethical cyber
practices. In other to be socially acceptable, some individuals get themselves
involved in acts they would not have got themselves involved in. They allow
what other people say about them to form their opinion about themselves and
yield easily to negative peer pressure to engage in all forms of unethical
cyber practices.
Exposure to societal ills like gambling and other unlawful act at a
tender age have a way of creating a mindset that becomes adamant to change. It
deteriorate to the point it becomes impossible for the minds to be turned
against these unlawful practices.
To every challenge, there is always a solution and whatever the
challenge may be there is always a way out. To curb this present day dilemma
and prevent people from engaging in cyber-crimes and every form of unethical
cyber practices, the following must be done:
A re-orientation among youths and a change of attitude among youths. The
youths must believe in themselves and their country so that they can contribute
positively to national growth and development and be useful to themselves as
well.
A change of attitude by public office holders, putting less emphasis on
wealth as a pre requisite to hold public office.
Government should focus on people oriented policies that will impact
positively on the standard of living of citizens, by reducing poverty,
unemployment and providing social infrastructure.
Government should organize programmes that will empower the youths and make
them employers of labour, creativity can still be returned to where everyone
would be able to think of how to affect his own nation positively.
Parents should be encouraged to help their children imbibe good moral
character, so that they can be useful not only to themselves but to the society
and this will encourage a cyber-crime free society and engagement in all forms
of unethical cyber practices.
I believe in a cyber-crime free society and a change from every form of
unethical cyber practices. Change is one of the few constant in life, some
people will fight it, some will embrace it, others will wait and see but no one
can avoid it.
I BELIEVE IN A
CYBER-CRIME FREE SOCIETY.
