The Power of Seeking God’s Guidance

Good evening, brothers and sisters! Today, let's look into an incredible story from Joshua 9, which teaches us the importance of seeking God’s guidance in every decision we make.

Setting the Scene:

Joshua and the Israelites were conquering the Promised Land, and their victories were causing fear among the surrounding nations. The kings west of the Jordan, from various tribes like the Hittites, Amorites, and Canaanites, united their armies to fight against Israel.

The Gibeonite Deception:

But the Gibeonites had a different plan. They heard about the fall of Jericho and Ai and knew they couldn't defeat Israel. So, they decided to use trickery. They put on old, worn-out clothes, carried moldy bread, and presented themselves as travelers from a distant land. When they arrived at the Israelite camp, they asked Joshua for a peace treaty.

Joshua’s Mistake:

Joshua and the Israelite leaders examined the evidence – the old clothes and moldy bread – and believed the Gibeonites' story. They made a peace treaty without consulting God. Three days later, they discovered the truth: the Gibeonites were their neighbors! But because they had made a vow before God, they kept their promise, making the Gibeonites servants instead of attacking them.

Lessons for Us:

1. Always Seek God’s Guidance: In our daily lives, we often face decisions that seem straightforward. But like Joshua, we can be deceived by appearances. Before making any decision, big or small, we should seek God’s wisdom. Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us to trust in the Lord with all our hearts and not lean on our understanding.

2. Honouring Commitments: Joshua and the leaders kept their vow to the Gibeonites, even though they were deceived. This teaches us the importance of keeping our promises. Our word should be our bond, especially when given before God.

3. God’s Mercy: Despite their deception, the Gibeonites were spared and became part of Israel’s community. This shows God’s mercy and grace. No matter our past mistakes or how far we’ve strayed, God is always ready to forgive and integrate us into His family if we come to Him.

Conclusion:

My dear friends, let this story remind us to always seek God’s guidance in our decisions, honour our commitments, and embrace God’s mercy. May we, like Joshua, learn from our mistakes and grow in our faith and obedience to God.

Let us pray: “Heavenly Father, thank You for Your wisdom and guidance. Help us to seek You in every decision we make and to honour our commitments. Thank You for Your mercy and grace. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.”

Go forth this week, seeking God’s direction and walking in His grace!

πŸ‘ Sheep Farming in Nigeria: Honouring Tradition, Strengthening Community, and Embracing Future Growth

Imagine driving through the lush fields of the Nigerian countryside, where sheep roam freely, tended by dedicated farmers who have passed down their knowledge from generation to generation.

Sheep farming in Nigeria is not just a way to earn a living; it's a time-honoured tradition that brings communities together and holds great promise for future growth.

Sheep farming in Nigeria is interesting and meaningful. Here are some simple and relatable points:

1. Cultural Pride: πŸ‘ Sheep farming is part of our culture. From the Fulani in the north to the Yoruba in the southwest, it’s a proud tradition. πŸ‡³πŸ‡¬

2. Income Generator: πŸ’° Many families depend on sheep farming for money. It helps with school fees, healthcare, and daily expenses.

3. Community Bonds: 🀝 Sheep farming unites communities. During festivals like Eid al-Adha, families come together to celebrate. πŸŽ‰

4. Environmental Benefits: 🌱 Sheep grazing helps the environment by preventing bush fires and promoting healthy soil.

5. Healthy Meat: πŸ– Mutton, or sheep meat, is popular in Nigerian dishes like pepper soup and suya. It’s tasty and nutritious. πŸ˜‹

6. Diverse Breeds: 🐏 Nigeria has different sheep breeds like the West African Dwarf and Balami, which are tough and fit for our climate.

7. Furry Friends: πŸ‘ Sheep can be friendly and bond with their shepherds, making them more than just livestock. πŸ’ž

8. Learning Opportunities: πŸ“š Sheep farming teaches responsibility, patience, and hard work to young people.

9. Traditional Medicine: 🌿 Some Nigerian cultures use sheep for traditional medicine, believing their milk, wool, and bones have healing properties.

10. Future Potential: πŸš€ With more interest in farming, sheep farming can boost Nigeria’s economy and food security. 🌾

Imagine a future where sheep farming in Nigeria not only preserves our rich culture and traditions but also boosts our economy and provides endless opportunities for growth. It's more than just farming; it's a journey of heritage and hope, weaving together the past and the future, with every bleat of a sheep echoing the promise of a brighter tomorrow for all Nigerians. πŸŒŸπŸ‘πŸ‡³πŸ‡¬

πŸ“š Key Insights from "Atomic Habits" by James Clear:

πŸ“š "Atomic Habits" by James Clear:

🌸 Introduction: My Story

- Do not let your injury get you down.

- In your journey to recovery, you may feel depressed and overwhelmed but you must persist through to victory.

- Regardless of your self doubt, you must believe that you can make it.

- You must take responsibility, as you are the one responsible for making it happen.

- You must be focused in getting your life in order.

- Develop daily and consistent habits that would enable you achieve your goals.

- The quality of our lives depends on the quality of our habits.

πŸ›°️ The Fundamentals

Why Tiny Changes Make a Big Difference

Chapter 1. The Suprising Power of Atomic Habits:

- Improving by one percent may not be particularly notable or noticeable but it can be far more meaningful, especially in the long run.

- The difference a tiny improvements can make overtime is astounding.

- If you get one percent better each day, you will end up with results that are nearly thirty seven percent after one year.

- Habits are the compound interest of self improvements.

- Success is the product of daily habits, not once in a lifetime transformation

- You get what you repeat, as your outcomes are a lagging measure of your habits.

- Good habits make time your ally while bad habits makes time your enemy.

- Forget about goals, focus on system instead.

- When you fall in love with the process rather than the product, you don't have to wait to give yourself permission to be happy.

- The purpose of setting goals is to win the game while the purpose of building systems is to continue playing the game.

πŸ›°️ The Fundamentals

Why Tiny Changes Make a Big Difference

Chapter 2. How Your Habits Shape Your Identity (And Vice Versa):

- Changing our habits is challenging for two reasons because we try to change the wrong thing and we try to change our habits the wrong way.

- There are three layers of behaviour change: a change in your outcomes, a change in your process or a change in your identity.

- Outcomes are what you get, processes are about what you do and identity is about what you believe.

- Decide the type of person you want to be and prove it to yourself with small wins.

- Be consistent and reliable

- Your habits shape your identity and your identity shape your habits.

- Identity change is the North Star of habit change.

Chapter 3. How to Build Better Habits in 4 Simple Steps:

- A habit is a behaviour that has been repeated enough times to become automatic.

- The process of building a habit can be divided into four simple steps: cue, craving, response and reward.

- Reward are the end goal of every habit (The cue is about noticing the reward. The craving is about wanting the reward. The response is about obtaining the reward)

- We chase reward because they satisfy us and teach us.

- To create a good habit, make it obvious, attractive, easy and satisfying.

- To break a bad habit, make it invisible, unattractive, difficult and unsatisfying.

πŸ›°️ The 1st Law: Make it obvious

Chapter 4. The Man Who Didn't Look Right:

- You are much more than your conscious self.

- There are no good habits or bad habits. There are only effective habits. (That is, effective at solving problems).

Chapter 5: The Best Way to Start a New Habit:

- People who make a specific plan for when and where they will perform a new habit are more likely to follow through.

- An implementation intention sweeps away foggy notions and transform them into a concrete plan of action.

- Many people think they lack motivation when what they lack is clarity.

- If you aren't sure when to start your habit, try the first day of the week, month or year.

- Habit stacking increases the likelihood that you will stick with a habit by stacking your new behaviour on top of the old one.

Chapter 6. Motivation is Overrated! Environment Often Matters More:

- People often choose products not because of what they are, but because of where they are.

- Your habits change depending on the room you are in and the cues in front of you.

- Environment is the invisible hand that shapes human behaviour.

- Behaviour is a function of the person in their environment.

- Customers will occasionally buy products not because they want them but because of how they are presented to them.

- Items at eye level tend to be purchased more than those down near the floor.

- You don't have to be the victim of your environment. You can also be the architect of it.

- If you want to make a habit a big part of your life, make the cue a big part of your environment.

- Environment design is powerful not only because it influences how we engage with the world but also because we rarely do it.

- Be the designer of your world and not merely the consumer of it.

- Our behaviour is not defined by the objects in the environment but by our relationship to them.

- A stable environment where everything has a place and a purpose is an environment where habits can easily form.

Chapter 7. The Secret to Self Control:

- You can break a habit but you are unlikely to forget it.

- We become the product of the environment that we live in.

- One of the most practical ways to eliminate a bad habit is to reduce exposure to the cue that causes it.

- Make the cues of your good habits obvious and the cues of your bad habit invisible.

πŸ›°️ The 2nd Law

Make It Attractive

Chapter 8. How to Make a Habit Irresistible:

- Habits are a dopamine-driven feedback loop.

- It is the anticipation of a reward -- not the fulfillment of it -- that gets us to take action.

- You are more likely to find a behaviour more attractive if you get to do one of your favourite things at the same time.

Chapter 9. The Role of Family and Friends in Shaping your Habits:

-  A genius is not born, but is educated and trained according to Laszlo Polgar

- With proper instruction, anyone could advance their skills.

- We don't choose our earliest habits, we imitate them. We follow the script handed down by our friends and family, our church or school, our local community and society at large.

- We follow the habits of our culture without thinking, without questioning, and sometimes without remembering.

- One of the most effective things you can do to build a better habit is to join a culture where your behaviour is the normal behaviour.

- Surround yourself with people who have the habits you want to have yourself. You will rise together.

-  Many of our daily habits are imitation of people we admire.

Chapter 10. How to Find and Fix the Causes of Your Bad Habits:

- Once you associate a solution with the problem you need to solve, you keep coming back to it.

- Habits are all about association.

- The cause of your habits is actually the prediction that precedes them.

- Habits are attractive when we associate them with positive feelings, and we can use this insights to our advantage rather than to our detriment.

πŸ›°️ The 3rd Law

Make It Easy

Chapter 11. Walk Slowly, but Never Backward:

- Action is the type of behaviour  that will deliver an outcome.

- Motion makes you feel like you are getting things done. But really, you are just preparing to getting things done.

- If you want to master a habit, the key is to start with repetition, not perfection.

- Repetition is a form of change.

Chapter 12. The Law of Least Effort:

- Motivation is the key to habit change.

- The less energy a habit requires, the more likely it is to occur.

- Every habit is an obstacle to getting what you really want.

- The greater the obstacle, the more difficult the habit.

- If you make your good habits more convenient, you will be more likely to follow through on them.

- Habits are easy to build when they fit into the flow of your life.

- When we remove the points of friction that saps our time and energy, we can achieve more with less efforts.

- The greater the friction, the less likely the habit.

Chapter 13. How to Stop Procrastinating by Using the Two Minutes Rule:

- 40 to 50 percent of our actions on any given day are done out of habit.

- The difference between a good day and a bad day is often a few productive and healthy choices made at decisive moments.

- We are limited by where our habits lead us.

- When you start a new habit, it should take less than two minutes to do.

- Instead of trying to engineer a perfect habit from the start, do the easy things on a more consistent basis.

- You have to standardize before you can optimize.

- Master the art of showing up.

Chapter 14. How to Make Good Habits Inevitable and Bad Habits Impossible:

- Success is less about making good habits easy and more about making bad habits hard.

- The best way to break a bad habit is to make it impractical to do.

πŸ›°️ The 4th Law

Make It Satisfying

Chapter 15. The Cardinal Rule of Behaviour Change:

- We are more likely to repeat a behaviour when the experience is satisfying.

- The vital thing in getting a habit to stick is to feel successful even if it's in a small way.

- The more a habit becomes a part of your life, the less you need outside encouragement to follow through.

- Incentives can start a habit. Identity sustains a habit.

Chapter 16. How to Stick With Good Habits Everyday:

- Making progress is satisfying, and visual measures provide clear evidence of your progress.

- The best way to measure your progress is with a habit tracker.

- Don't break the chain. Try to keep your habit streak alive.

- The most effective form of motivation is progress.

Chapter 17. How an  Accountability Partner Can Change Everything:

- The straightforward way to add an immediate cost to any bad habit is to create a habit contract to hold yourself accountable.

- To make bad habit unsatisfying, your best option is to make them painful in the moment. Creating a habit contract is a straightforward way to do exactly that.

πŸ›°️ Advanced Tactics

How to Go from Being Merely Good to Being Merely Great

Chapter 18. The Truth About Talent (When Genes Matter and When They Don't):

- The secret to maximizing your odds of success is to choose the right field of competition.

- Our environment determines the suitability of our genes and the utility of our natural talent.

- Competence is highly dependent on context.

- Genes do not determine your destiny. They determine your areas of opportunity.

- Direct your effort towards area that both excite you and match your natural skills to align your ambition with your ability.

- Habits needs to be enjoyable if they are going to stick.

- Pick the right habit and progress is easy.

- When you can't win by being better, you can win by being different.

- Even if you are not the most naturally gifted, you can often win by being the best in a very narrow category.

- If you can find more favourable environment, you can transform the situation from one where the odds are against you to one where they are in your favour.

- The better we understand our nature, the better our strategy can be.

- Work hard on the things that come easy.

Chapter 19. The Goldilocks Rule: How to Stay Motivated in Life and Works

- Maximum motivation occurs when facing a challenge of just manageable difficulty.

- When you are starting a new habit, it's important to keep the behaviour as easy as possible so you can stick with it even when conditions aren't perfect.

- The greatest threat to success is not failure but boredom.

- When a habit is truly important to you, you have to be willing to stick with it in any mood.

- The only way to become excellent is to be endlessly fascinated by doing the same thing over and over. You have to fall in love with boredom.

Chapter 20. The Downside of Creating Good Habits:

- Habits create the foundation for mastery.

- Every chunk of information that is memorized opens up the mental space for more effortful thinking.

- Habits are the backbone of any pursuit of excellence.

- Habits are necessary, but not sufficient for mastery. What you need is a combination of automatic habits and deliberate practice.

- Habits + Deliberate Practice = Mastery

- Mastery is the process of narrowing your focus to a tiny element of success, repeating it until you have internalized the skill, and then using the new habit as the foundation to advance to the next frontier of your development.

- Sustaining an effort is the most important thing for any enterprise. The way to be successful is to learn how to do things right, then do them the same way every time.

- Reflection and review enables the long term improvement of all habits because it makes you aware of your mistakes and helps you consider possible path for improvement.

- The tighter we cling to an identity, the harder it becomes to grow beyond it.

- The keys to mitigating losses of identity is to redefine yourself such that you get to keep important aspect of your identity even if your particular role changes.

- Evolve Always.

πŸ›°️ Conclusion

The Secret to Results that Last

- Success is not a goal to reach or a finish line to cross. It is a system to improve, an endless process to refine.

- Small habits don't add up, they compound. That's the power of atomic habits. Tiny Changes. Remarkable Results.
